Tim Berners-Lee: So this is one of the qualities of an open platform: it is built to enable, not to control, and it does not try to second guess the things which will be built using it.

Ceiling technologies are the end of the road for innovation.

vista incoming

Back in October I wrote a post about Microsoft collecting data from crash logs. Guess what, looking at my referer data, it seems the search term "vista crashes" seems quite popular since the end of January.

google wiki

It's interesting: Those Wikis turn out to be the best (regarding usability) which call temselves not even so. Like last.fm's bio page or Google Groups Pages. I think with Wikipedia's dominance everybody now believes that Wiki=Monobook-Theme. I beg that we get rid of this cluttered beast. I see Wikis more like frameworks. The theme is just the surface. Monobook as a surface does a good job in hiding what the original idea of Wikis was: Speed. And ease of use.

As Wiki now stands for Wikipedia/Monobook, it's not a bad idea to call a service different. The Wiki-Idea stays as a concept and does its core tasks under the hood (versioning, user management).

This is where PhpWiki comes in. PhpWiki is kind of an underdog. The default theme lacks the feature bombardement of Monobook and is not quite appealing to the eye (like, say WordPress - I know, it's not a Wiki but that's a different (long) story). I think the lack of a good default theme turns many people off. However, IMHO it has a fairly good if not exceptional codebase. When I think further and look at the latest PhpWiki developments regarding Semantic Web and Wysiwyg, what I see is not just a plain Wiki but the basis, well, a framework for building future web applications. Maybe we'll just have to name them different. Like SocialText, SystemOne, JotSpot and others of course.

btw, this page was made using PhpWiki too.

things you do not know about me

Some time ago Michael Kamleitner passed the "5 things you don't know about me..."-game-thing on to me. Times were busy so I had no time so far to find out five things you don't know anyway. Actually I don't like "Kettenbriefe", so maybe I should report my own posting here.

This posting is written in the tradition of my former blogSemifiktive Halbwahrheiten, so don't believe everything.

  • I got my first computer when I was 8 years old and started programming in BASIC. I wrote a text adventure loosely based on one of Asterix' Interactive Game Books. It was never finished because it needed to much RAM (not as much as Vista but more then the PET's builtin 4KB).

    Commodore_4032.jpg&w=500&q=90
  • I cannot remember how many times I have been to Greece (I guess it's been more than 15 times).
  • I am happy.
  • I am introverted.
  • I am the brother of a guy who owns some space on the moon (at least that's what he told me...).

Now if I remember correctly I have to pass this game on to five others (speak "create inlinks to their blogs"): Ron Gilbert (grumpygamer.com), Christian Langreiter (langreiter.com), Susanne, Marius Watz (generator.x) and Heinz Wittenbrink (lost and found).

barcampkaernten

Heute Sonntag bisher fröhlicher Beginn mit The Mark & Ed Show.
