What Email Is For Maps

How Sergey Brin pitched Google Wave. "We'd worked on our message," he said, "and we boiled it down to this: 'We think we have an idea that will have a bigger impact on email than Google Maps had on maps.'" --oreilly.com

I'm waiting relaxed for the idea that will have a bigger impact on email than OpenStreetMap had on maps.

Granular Dialog

I think in terms of publishing and communication blogging and even microblogging still stands for: I publish, you read. It's not: We discuss. It's more like: Hear what I say. I want your attention. (Not really your opinion or reaction)

Comments in blogs imply a hierarchy of author vs. commentators. Links between blog articles do not allow detailed references. You can only link to the whole article, not single paragraphs or sentences (except if the author would provide you with anchor tags for them). Of course interesting is the kind of dialog in Twitter using @username. However, it's a closed system and you're quite limited in the way you're able to link (you cannot do something like my friend for example).

I propose the term granular dialog for a new way of web communication. Let's think of a classic blog entry as elements of microcontent (paragraphs, images, even single sentences). Microcontent in the sense Anil Dash describes it: "... content that conveys one primary idea or concept, is accessible through a single definitive URL or permalink, and is appropriately written and formatted for presentation in email clients, web browsers, or on handheld devices as needed.".

What's important here is that by permalinking microcontent, single elements of large content types become referenceable. In that sense a more granular dialog is possible.

By the way, we do not need Google Wave for this. We can do that with the web itself, in a more standardized, open way.

Link Myths

Lesestoff aus aktuellem Anlass:

Links and Law und Links and Law: Myths

The ability to refer to a document (or a person or any thing else) is in general a fundamental right of free speech to the same extent that speech is free. Making the reference with a hypertext link is more efficient but changes nothing else.

When the "speech" itself is illegal, whether or not it contains hypertext links, then its illegality should not be affected by the fact that it is in electronic form.

Users and information providers and lawyers have to share this convention. If they do not, people will be frightened to make links for fear of legal implications.

Stabilizing videos with VirtualDub

I remember how cool it was when we stabilized our first videos back in 1999 at university using Flint on a Silicon Graphics O2. A review from 1998 ...

All of this performance in a package less than $40,000. Wow. digitalcontentproducer.com

Makes me smile now. Back then stabilizing was a complex task with lot's of manual work. Some years later Optical Flow came up and made things a lot easier. This technique is able to analyze movements in movies and automatically stabilize it. Better plugins for example for Shake were about 4000USD.

Finally, today we have VirtualDub and its DeShaker Plugin. Both are open source and free. Zero USD. And I think the results are stunning for a zero configuration solution.

This makes this technique much more accessible. Here's the manual (scroll down).

Nice Team

Acquia is the commercial branch of Drupal. Have a look at their future plans, it's no concept to rule the world but still, pragmatic. Although it's not my favorite CMS (there is none yet :-)) it's still pretty good and I partly like their approach.

todesblog

Heute koennte man sagen ...
