Die Herren smi und helge ziehen gegen Hermann Maurer zu Felde (Bluatwiesn). Ich bewundere der beiden Durchhaltevermögen, ich selber gebe zu, beim Lesen der Artikel nicht durchgehalten zu haben. Einwerfen möchte ich nur, dass uns Herr Maurer auch im Rahmen der Triple-I aufgefallen ist, nämlich als jemand, der den Spagat zwischen Wissenschafter und Philip K. Dick einfach nicht hinbekommt.

Aber: Reingefallen sind wir alle. Schließlich schreiben wir gerade über einen Herrn, der im Moment mit seinen "Artikeln" und Interviews nichts anderes macht als Werbung für sein neues Buch und eine Firma, in der er als stellvertretender Aufsichtsratvorsitzender sitzt. Da könnte ich eigentlich gleich über Halo 3 schreiben.

Fasse in alter polemischer Manier zusammen. Matznetter startet lobhudelnd. Türke kontert: "Fünf Zeilen Internet im Regierungsprogramm sind nicht genug". Es ist knapp nach 10, da rückt Einzinger damit raus, dass Om Malik nicht kommt. Tragische Geschichte wird aufgetischt: Visaprobleme wegen Maliks indischem Pass verhinderten trotz hilfreichem Außenministerium Einreise. Wir müssen mit einer Videobotschaft vorlieb nehmen. Die groteske Situation erheitert mich: Ein Sall voller Anzugtypen (Ausnahme Eric ;)) verfolgt Malik, der übernachtig im Sweatshirt vom Sofa aus seine Gedanken preisgibt (die übrigens wie ausgemacht den ISPs ganz gut gepasst haben dürften).

Weiter im Programm: Jeff Barr pitched deutlich gekennzeichnet vom Jetlag AWS. Hans Mahr gibt den "Alten Medien" zu verstehen, dass sie keine Angst haben müssen, alles bleibt neu. Pachner nickt zufrieden. Jeff Barr nickt ein. Axel Schmiegelov (sevenload.de): "Mit zielgruppenorientiertem Marketing macht es auch Sinn, Content für weniger als 100.000 zu machen. Beim Fernsehen reicht das nicht, Herr Mahr kann Ihnen darüber sicher mehr erzählen". Ein Lächeln huscht über mein Gesicht. Mahr's Retourkutsche mit der Burda-Anspielung ist dagegen eher schwach. Jeff Barr wacht wieder auf. Seine Augen sind so blutunterlaufen, dass ich wegschauen muss. Schmiegelov weiter (keine Garantie, dass ich das richtig gehört habe): "Wir hatten null Marketingbudget und fuhren ausschließlich virales Marketing ... (wird leiser) ... und, naja, am Anfang hatten wir auch Pornos ... aber da sind wir jetzt restriktiver." Miletich weiß: Guter Content braucht gute Autoren. Der simple (natürlich richtige) Gedanke wird aber nicht weiter verfolgt. Insgesamt hat man eher das Gefühl, dass die ISPs der Meinung wären, dass sie sich selbst auch um den Content (=Money?) kümmern müssen, natürlich mit ganz neuen Ideen: Walled Garden, Klingeltöne, IPTV à la 9Live. Hawedere. Pachners Moderation reduziert sich im Grunde auf die Eröffnung des Mittagsbuffets.

Nachmittag: Infrastruktursession. Topic (De)Regulierung. Sue B. Moon: "I'm the only academic here and I don't know that much about Korea's ISPs so I'll just tell you what I do..." Thema verfehlt, trotzdem ein Highlight: Überblick über den koreanischen Markt mit etwas SNA gewürzt.

Letzte Session next generation internet. Nur kurz: Schrems traurig, Frederic Tömböl gewitzt; Einzinger kann es nicht lassen und bringt wie Mahr das Meine-3jährige-Tochter-kennt-sich-mit-diesen-neuen-Medien-so-gut-aus-da-können-wir-alten-nicht-mehr-mit-Beispiel.

Anschließend im Palmenhaus get-together mit alten Bekannten.

In my neverending search for a good way to cope with information overload (regarding this stupid habit of mine reading weblogs) I revisited newspipe which does RSS2IMAP. It let's you convert every single blog posting of the RSS feeds you've subscribed to to emails. That way you're able to read your feeds with the email software of your choice. As I use Thunderbird as my regular email software I chose Mac OS X Mail.app for a little experiment.

First: If you want to try this too chose a email reader you don't use normally, otherwise you would screw things up...

So what is this all about?

What I'm currently trying out is using Mail.app's Junk algorithm to actually recommend blog posts. First I set up newspipe and sent the resulting emails to an empty imap account. Then I set up this very imap account in Mail.app, reset the application's junk settings and set junk mail filtering to Perform custom actions. I used the advanced settings to mark junk mail as flagged (strangely enough, after that Mail.app would set the filtering back to Training, but it will still work). Finally I created a Smart Mailbox to display all flagged messages (unfortunately you can't tell a Smart Mailbox to display junk mail, that's why I set the junk filter to flag the mails in the first place).

When you're now reading the first messages you'll have to train the algorithm (I use Apple-Shift-L and Apple-Shift-J to mark a message as flagged/junk). Later on Mail.app will try to guess if a posting is interesting for you (or not).

I'm still testing this right now as new messages come in, but a first look made me smile, because it seems to work (it recommended some processing sketches but skipped a posting about a Techcrunch party ;)).

Today's lineup featured two keynotes: Prof. Dr. Martin Eppler (of visual-literacy.org-fame) demoed Let's focus. SUN's Peter Reiser elaborated on Enterprise 2.0 and community equity (too bad we had to leave the session to reach our train back to Vienna). I was surprised to see him mentioning a company just a few blocks away from my flat (no, not tupalo.com): Andreas Blumauer's punkt .netServices Labs (some very promising sem-web prototypes). So it seems besides offering Vienna's best beer and Mannerschnitten, Ottakring is becoming a Web2.0 Eldorado.

Starting this week I joined the new media department of MODUL University Vienna as a full time researcher. For me this is a big opportunity to escape the ever and sometimes too demanding (and frustrating) world of self-employment in the media business. What's even better is the fact that this new job will let me focus on research I did in the past while staying independent of do-it-because-you-need-the-money-jobs. Next week I'll start working with the team who's developing IDIOM. This week we're at Triple-I in Graz. Below you'll find some people and papers I found interesting.

Today's keynote was held by Marc Smith from Microsoft Research. He showed attempts in providing tree-map based interfaces to mailing-lists and e-mail in general (in this case general meaning a software known as Outlook).

I removed the Lijit Widget from the page. The idea is great, but search was simply too slow. I replaced it with PhpWiki's builtin FullTextSearch at the top right.

However, if you want to try out Lijit on myob you may still do so below (permalink). And I encourage you to try out the widget's explore button for some highly addictive social network browsing (didn't work in Firefox for me, try Safari - dunno about IE).

Immer in Erinnerungen bleiben die mir damals ewig erscheinenden Fahrten im orangen VW-Bus mit Pfeilmusteraufklebern und Westfalia-Ausbau durch Jugoslawien bis Thessaloniki über Betonautobahnen mit Oleandermittelstreifen. Vierundzwanzig Stunden am Stück dauerte so eine Fahrt, die Eltern wechselten sich alle paar Stunden ab und hielten sich mit Filterkaffee aus einer Thermoskanne wach. Uns Kinder verkürzte eine Musikkassette meines Vaters mit für mich nicht entzifferbaren Hieroglyphen (natürlich war es griechisch) die Zeit.

Irgendwann habe ich diese Kindheitserinnungen in Form einer MC mitgehen lassen. Doch so wie mein Doppelkassettendeck verschwand, war auch diese Kassette verschollen. Bis sie mir beim Entrümpeln meines Büros wieder in die Hände fiel.

Neulich kam ich mit Hermann darauf zu sprechen und er offenbahrte mir, dass er im Besitz eines UHER CR 240 sei, ein antiker, mobiler Profikassettenrecorder - so groß wie ein Toaster. Ich durfte dieses Juwel ausborgen und konnte dank einem beiliegenden Adapter von der fünfpoligen DIN-Buchse auf Miniklinke die MC mit Namen "Songs from Greece (INSTRUMENTAL)" digitalisieren.

In dem Plastikgehäuse verbarg sich mehr als nur ein Magnetband. Jeder einzelne scheppernde Ton ist eine Erinnerung an meine Kindheit, mein antikes Griechenland. Als ich klein war, wollte ich nicht Lokomotivführer werden, sondern tatsächlich entweder Paläontologe oder Bouzouki-Spieler, ein griechischer Mariachi quasi. Gelernt habe ich später Klavier und mein Geld verdiene ich nicht mit Fossilien.
