Durfte gestern nach langem wieder Mister Gilliams Brazil sehen. Der Anfang erschreckend gut prophetisch, der Rest atmet etwas lang.

Brain wash accomplished. OliverStone in 2001

I think the revolt of September 11 was about "Fuck you! Fuck your order." Does anybody make a connection between the 2000 election and the events of September 11?

2006 he is assimilated with popcorn cinema's entertainment junkie generation.

Stone insists that he has no political opinions of the event.

Tanzania and Darwins Nightmare

Some things need time (like translating Milles Plateaux from French to German).

Let me tell you a story: A director named Hubert Sauper made a documentary called Darwin's Nightmare. If I remember correctly it took about five years to prepare and shoot the film. It premiered over two years ago. Later it got an Oscar nomination for best documentary. However, it seemed to me that it never had the impact it could have. The movie picks Victoria Lake's fish industry in Tanzania as an example of how different and wide-spread the influences of globalization can be.

Now, two years after its first screening, the movie seems to have a real world effect. Richard Mgamba, a local journalist interviewed in the film, was detained by police and threatened with deportation.. Sauper stated that Tanzania declared people who worked with Sauper on the movie as enemies of the state. And it seems Tanzanian authorities launched their propaganda machinery: It seems they inscentated demonstrations and did some press releases.

The good thing is, that it seems that there's some attention to the problem. The bad thing of course is, that there may be individuals in danger and that the discussion may not be about the core problem but only scratch the surface. The problem is not if the film affected Tanzania's fishing industry, it's about how a regime threats free speach and manipulates the public. Nobody of the demonstrators could have seen the film, it has never been screened in Tanzania. This could be a similarity to the demonstrations in Syria concerning the denish caricatures.

As a side note: Austrian based director Sauper critized Austria's most popular newspaper Kronen Zeitung about how they feature the problem and calls it racistic agitation. I haven't read the article yet.

Globefish, a division of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, said the film had only briefly affected sales. Far bigger factors in the decline in exports -- worth $116 million last year, down from $127 million in 2004 -- were overfishing and low water levels.

Meanwhile Reporters Without Borders has criticised the Tanzanian government for threatening to deport a journalist who appeared in a documentary film the authorities say has damaged the country's economy and image.

Another question I have is: Who publishes daily-tsn.com?

rhnav rhizome navigation used to create genealogy motion graphics

I kept quiet about this project for quite a while, but now is the time to tell you a little bit about it: For an upcoming documentary by Benedikt Bjarnason, Rhizome Navigation was used to create animated visualizations of large genealogy data sets.

Below you can find a sample. It shows a 3d family tree starting with director Bjarnason at the bottom and going up to early icelandic settlers from early 10th century. The graph layout was done using an adapted force-directed algorithm and features more than 3300 persons.

What set's it apart from similar visualizations is the capability to show far more complex relationships by breaking up the classic tree structure and following a more rhizome-like approach - and of course the sheer amount of relationships shown.

Rhizome Navigation is a development framework for building data mining and information visualization related (real-time) applications. It is based on the wonderful processing.

Update: French blogs talk and comment on Rhizome Navigation. I better start refreshing my rusty French language skills...

Using Rhizome Navigation I analyzed the protagonist's relationships from the movie Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. The size of a name relates to how many times it is mentioned within the movie script. The name positions are calculated by parsing the screenplay and analyzing which names appear close to each other in the text.

Some thoughts: Frodo and Sam are very close to each other (of course), and it's interesting that the two stand between Gollum and The Ring. Although Aragorn is linked to both Arwen and Eowyn, the relationship seems not very strong (when compared to Frodo/Sam and Gandalf/Pippin for example). Both women appear at the opposite end of the graph. The relationships Gandalf/Pippin and Frodo/Sam seem equally weighted. This could also be an indication how the main storylines of the scripts are weighted.

I'm looking forward to you interpretations.

More related stuff coming soon.

die hard again

Quote from a press release from 2001...

Actor Bruce Willis is so shocked by recent attacks on America, he's sworn never to play an action hero again. He says, "I'm not an action hero anymore, and I think it would be inappropriate for me to compare anything that happens in Hollywood and the entertainment industry to the tragic loss of life on September 11th. I know people who died in that tragedy. It's impossible to wrap your mind around what happened there. What happens in Hollywood isn't real - it's about diversion. What I'm trying to do is just entertain people. I'm proud to be an entertainer."

Bled Runner
