Using Rhizome Navigation I analyzed the protagonist's relationships from the movie Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. The size of a name relates to how many times it is mentioned within the movie script. The name positions are calculated by parsing the screenplay and analyzing which names appear close to each other in the text.

Some thoughts: Frodo and Sam are very close to each other (of course), and it's interesting that the two stand between Gollum and The Ring. Although Aragorn is linked to both Arwen and Eowyn, the relationship seems not very strong (when compared to Frodo/Sam and Gandalf/Pippin for example). Both women appear at the opposite end of the graph. The relationships Gandalf/Pippin and Frodo/Sam seem equally weighted. This could also be an indication how the main storylines of the scripts are weighted.

I'm looking forward to you interpretations.

More related stuff coming soon.

Rhizome Navigation is based on the wonderful processing.

Lijit (Explore)

I removed the Lijit Widget from the page. The idea is great, but search was simply too slow. I replaced it with PhpWiki's builtin FullTextSearch at the top right.

However, if you want to try out Lijit on myob you may still do so below (permalink). And I encourage you to try out the widget's explore button for some highly addictive social network browsing (didn't work in Firefox for me, try Safari - dunno about IE).

Did some experiments with Google's Social Graph API and Twitter. Images were done with Rhizome Navigation. The graph shows mutual relationships between 200 people (with my account in the center). The background is darker in areas where people are more connected.

Facebook Tax

Rodney Rumford: "The challenge that facebook has on their hands is great. They offer access to 80 million users; but companies that choose to try and leverage the opportunity are subjected to a never-ending set of rule set changes. These rule set changes could (and have) forced some businesses to choose to not embrace the facebook app platform. Making a business decision when the platform owner (facebook) can (and does) frequently change the rules is a serious business challenge. The bottom line here is that the facebok rules are starting to feel more and more like the tax code. You know what happens when you have the tax code? You need an expert to navigate the waters. I am not saying the new rules are inherently bad; they just keep changing and getting much more complex."
